About the Toccoa River
The Toccoa River
The Toccoa River

Toccoa in Cherokee means Beautiful River. In 1835, 29 Indians families lived along the banks of the Toccoa River. In 1838 they were sent West on the "Trail of Tears March". The Beautiful River that once supported their lively hood remains, along with the wildlife that lives in the river and a long its banks.

Beaver and otter call The Toccoa River their home, water fowl and many species of birds are abundant. Deer come to its banks to drink, trout are abundant in its waters. Some of the stone fish traps built by the Cherokee Indians can still be seen.

“Wilderness is a tonic but nature at a distance is only an abstraction.” We must make sacrifices to bring nature into our daily lives. So come float the river, find a moment to close your eyes and listen.
